Nicholas Holt is an artist working with photography to investigate our relationship with the natural world. His projects balance an intuitive, personal vision with varied physical and conceptual terrains. He draws on John Cage’s notion of art as self-alteration rather than self-expression.
He holds an MA in Photojournalism and Documentary Photography with distinction from London College of Communication, University of the Arts London (2022).
He has been awarded the Royal Photographic Society Environmental Bursary (2023) and was an artist in residence through the UAL AER programme at JOYA: arte + ecología, Spain (2023). He was also artist in residence at the Montello Foundation, Nevada, USA (2024), and at La Wayaka Current, Atacama Desert (2025).
Group exhibitions include Amoeba, Stockport (2024–2025); GroundWork Gallery, Norfolk (2024); Sony World Photography Awards Exhibition (2023); Dewpoint – The Humid, The Georgia Museum, USA (2022); and Galerie Huit Arles, Arles Open Walls (2020).
His work has been published in Dark Mountain Art Special (2025), Echrai Journal (2024), The Royal Photographic Society Journal (2024), and Source Magazine (2022).
He was Artistic Director of the Dark Peak Photography Festival (2024) and curated and edited An Eye in Reserve: Egypt 1935–1939, a book project with the Lee Miller Archives (2022).
He is a founding member of Collective 454, an international group of research-based, environmentally focused photographers, named after the age of the Earth (4.54 billion years). The collective’s first publication, IR (2024), was featured at Photobooks Switzerland, Geneva.
